Researchers from Microsoft Research & Stanford University studied the number of steps recorded by the Microsoft activity tracker bands & published it in an “Influence of Pokémon Go on Physical Activity”. In the study, the most engaged fans of the game walked 25% more than they did before the Pokémon Go game release.

The study reads, “We find that Pokémon Go increased activity all across the studied population, largely independent of prior activity level, age, weight status or gender.” The results suggest that the positive effects due to Pokémon Go are available even to sedentary, obese & older users.

They wrote, “Effectively reaching these users with physical activity interventions is critical for public health.” The study estimates that Pokémon Go players across the US walked an additional 144 bn steps in the game’s first month. And if continued over a longer period, they could collectively add nearly three billion years to their lifespans.
